Why exactly can the city of New York not be bothered to paint lines for parking spaces?
Sure, paint is more expansive than not painting. But, given how generally terrible people are at parking, they should more than recover the costs incurred from painting lined spaces through additional parking violation fines.

That volvo looks so out of place for some reason. It's almost like it's been shopped in.

What does one do in this situation?
Like, what does etiquette dictate, and what does real life dictate?

Looks like a fine example of "I live in NYC so I don't care about my bumpers so I'll do what I have to to get out of this spot and then I'll pull a baseball bat out of my trunk and go to town on whichever of these asshats boxed me in so badly."
Note: I don't deal with this kind of motherfucking bullshit, so I'm not sure what civil social procedure dictates here.

If this happened in the Jeep the dude in the Toyota would be getting a heaping helping of tow hitch.

I hate these damn people who do this. Bump parking is a pain in the ass. I don't care how much people hate those bumper bully things, but I actually find them quite useful if you don't want your bumper to end up looking like Hulk regurgitated some 7-11 brand beef jerky on your back bumper.

Nah! he will get out.. after bumping both cars a few 100 times maybe. My room mate was notorious for it, up until the time he dented a Corolla real good and got caught by the owner in the process..

I once returned to my car - a Peugeot 106 - to find it attached to the car parked in front - a Peugeot 306 Estate - via its tow bar, which had slotted pretty much perfectly into my car's lower grille-type thing. I asked some people in the adjacent shop, and it turned out that a van had reversed into the 306, doing no damage, but initiating this strange Peugeot-to-Peugeot conjoinment.
Thankfully, the 306's owner returned within a minute or so, and through an extremely delicate manoeuvre - which involved my friends pressing down on the 306's rear bumper to lower the tow bar - we were able to bring an end to this unfortunate coupling, with no damage to either car.

I imagine that etiquette dictates you wait for one of the other cars' owners to return. Real life, however, dictates that you bump each car - as gently as possible, to show at least some consideration for etiquette's demands - until you've enough room to get out.

Because not all vehicles are the same size. Painting lines would eliminate a large number of spots just because of the extra space people left between cars. I have very seriously considered busting out go-jacks to move a car up a few feet when I can obviously see there would be enough room for whatever I'm driving.

Smash bumpers in all directions. Or burnout/pivot a-la GTA V.

Agree. The bumper covers are ugly as sin, I get pissed when I see people driving around with it still on. Put that shit away!

Yeah, when driving they do look ugly as sin. But the main advantage is less dinged bumpers. Which are expensive to repair, and also show that you might not care about your car, giving less people reason to stick around if they decide that they are going to tap you.

He'll get out, might cost a few bumper shock absorbers, but he'll get out.
